DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College athletic department held its annual awards ceremony on Wednesday at Wells Theater on Wesley's campus.
All of Wesley's 18 intercollegiate teams were represented and recognized during the ceremony. The athletic department also announced the Wentworth Memorial Award and the Male and Female Athletes of the Year.
The Wentworth Award was given to senior baseball player Collin Miller and senior women's soccer player Natalie Trujillo. The Wentworth Award is given to student-athletes for their courage, commitment, sportsmanship and leadership as student-athletes at Wesley.
The Female Athlete of the Year was given to senior softball player Nina Marcano. Marcano was named the Fastpitch News National Player of the Week twice in 2017. Marcano also holds Wesley career records in runs scored, hits, runs batted in, triples and stolen bases. She also has single-season records in triples, hits and runs batted in. In 2017, Marcano had a .452 batting average with six home runs, 57 hits, 45 RBIs, 36 runs scored, 21 stolen bases and reached base at a .490 clip.
Male Athlete of the Year honors went to senior football player Jamar Baynard and senior baseball player Trey Mears. Baynard was a two-time first team All-NJAC honoree and was named to the D3football.com All-East Region First Team. Baynard is tops on Wesley's career scoring, rushing attempts, rushing touchdowns and total touchdown lists. Baynard has accumulated over 5,500 yards of total offense and 59 touchdowns. Mears was All-CAC Second Team in 2014 and 2016 and was the CAC Rookie of the Year in 2013. Mears was twice named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week and ECAC South Player of the Week in 2017. As of the last NCAA stat report, Mears leads Division III in batting average, hits, runs and stolen bases.
