2019-2020 Shirley Wentworth Memorial Award

2019-2020 Shirley Wentworth Memorial Award

In March of 2002 Wesley College Athletics lost a devoted friend and supporter in the passing of Mrs. Shirley Wentworth. For forty-one years, Mrs. Wentworth had been a fixture in Wesley College Athletics, assisting first her husband and then her son with the Men's Basketball team, but also serving as a devoted fan to all of Wesley's teams.

Those that were privileged to know Mrs. Wentworth would remember her always for what she did, but mostly for who she was. Shirley Wentworth had remarkable integrity, character and morals. She could be counted on to always do the right thing, the compassionate thing, the fair thing. She supported others without fail, and always had an encouraging word, even in the bleakest of circumstances. She did all this while facing her own personal battles with enormous strength and quiet courage. She was, in short, an amazing woman.

To honor her memory, Wesley College Athletics has established the Shirley Wentworth Memorial Award. This honor will go annually to those students who most embody the characteristics that she held so dear. Specifically, the students will demonstrate outstanding sportsmanship, character, courage and commitment.

Our first recipient is from Parkville, MD, a 4-year member of the softball team, and a team captain this past season, Brooke Retkowski. A multimedia communications major, Retkowski has been involved in many areas on Wesley's campus - student ambassador for Admissions (coordinator for past 2 years), SGA Secretary, and has assisted the SID and Institutional Advancement office's by taking photos at different events. "She is a team player and always places her teams needs above her own" stated Softball coach Juli Greep

Our male recipient, from Silver Spring, MD, Ian Thorne, is a cross country and track athlete and became the liaison between the coach and runners this past season. "Thorne cares deeply for his teammates and never hesitated to be their voice. His constant positive attitude and encouragement on those long competition days was contagious. He is not a runner who enjoys long distance but attended open practices, and ran in every race, even the ones he didn't have to, in order to support his team and help earn a group placement"  stated Cross Country coach Jillian Lontz.  Those remarks were echoed by Track head coach Greg Lambert: "Ian was just an honest, good-hearted teammate who cared about those around them. His intentions were always honorable as well as selfless".

Retkowski and Thorne embody the characteristics of the shirley Wentworth Memorial Award specifically, sportsmanship, character, courage and commitment. The Wesley College athletic department is honored to present this award to them.
