DOVER, Del. - On Tuesday afternoon, several Wesley College student-athletes and athletic department staff members took their seats in College Center 206 and listened as Mike Cadore explained how he went from nothing to something through goal-setting, decision-making, leadership and motivation.
Motivational speaker Mike Cadore played football at Eastern Kentucky University before being drafted by the New Orleans Saints and playing professionally in Canada. The former professional football player went on to become a law enforcement officer, professor at a small Florida college, and spends his time speaking to young people on positive leadership and motivation.
On Tuesday he addressed Wesley College student-athletes and athletic department staff, thanks to coordination with Athletic Director Mike Drass. "It was great having Mike Cadore here to speak with our student-athletes," said Drass. "His message of positive leadership and decision-making seemed to have a great impact."
Several student-athletes in attendance agreed with Drass that Cadore's talk left a lasting impression. Zach Gaudlip, a member of the Wesley Men's Soccer team, felt like the hour spent had an immediate impact: "The one thing that stuck out to me was his message, 'Serve the community and the community will serve you.' That and the point he made about not letting fear impact your decision-marking, that you have to overcome your fears."
Lily Engel, a junior on the Wesley Softball team, said that the speech gave her extra motivation to aim high, "He definitely provided extra motivation and some added pressure to accomplish my goals... A good kind of pressure."
Nearly 150 student-athletes attended the session with Cadore, and nearly all of them seemed to take something from the speech.
