Baseball Holds On Against Gwynedd-Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - Wesley College's baseball team held on to defeat Gwynedd-Mercy, 15-11 at GMC Baseball Field on Thursday night.  The Wolverines improve to 15-8 on the year while the Griffins fall to 11-9.

The 3-4-5 hitters for Wesley: Trevor Mears, Cory Smith and Morgan Rupp; combined for half of the Wolverines' 12 base hits and seven RBIs to help the Navy & White to the victory.

Rupp drove in both Mears and Jon Carlson with a two-out single in the top of the first but the Griffins cut the lead in half with a run in the second.

Through six innings, Wesley continued to lead by the same 2-1 margin as starting pitcher Zach Stuart (2-2) allowed one unearned run on five hits through five frames. Eric Willey pitched a perfect sixth inning before the Wolverines erupted for seven runs on five hits and two GMC errors to take a 9-1 lead. A bases clearing double by Mears which scored Steve Perone, Conner Gobright and Carlson highlighted the inning.

Willey also retired the side in the seventh, his final inning of work and Wesley added another five runs in the eighth.

GMC got a run back in its half of the eighth which the Wolverines countered for in the ninth as Matt Domian was plunked with the bases loaded.

With a 15-2 lead, Wesley struggled to close out the ninth as the Griffins scored nine runs on just four hits and eight walks.  Rich Lober came in with the bases loaded and got the final out for the Wolverines.

The Wolverines start a three-game CAC series with their arch-rival in No. 4 Salisbury University on April 6-7.  The Sea Gulls host a 1 pm doubleheader on April 6 before the series comes to Dover for a 1 pm start on April 7.
