FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Wesley College's baseball team scored 19 runs in a doubleheader but dropped both games at Methodist University on Saturday. The Wolverines (20-17) lost the opener, 11-8, before falling in the nightcap, 19-11.
A six-run sixth inning by Wesley in the opener gave the Wolverines a 6-4 lead, but the Monarchs got four runs in their half of the inning to retake the lead. Five different Wesley players recorded RBIs in the inning, including an RBI triple by Morgan Rupp which gave the Wolverines their first lead of the game. Sam Farnell drove in Rupp with a long fly ball to centerfield.
Robles, Cory Smith and Rupp each had two hits in the first game.
The Wolverines went up 4-0 early in game two with three runs in the second and one more in the fourth. Two of Wesley's run in the second inning came on an error before a sacrifice fly by Farnell. Rupp drove in Carlson with a sacrifice fly in the third.
The lead was quickly erased and reversed as the Monarchs tallied eight runs in the sixth and seven in the seventh. Domian, Carlson and Smith all tallied RBI hits in the eighth and Steve Perone added another in the ninth but the lead was too much to overcome.
Domian finished the second game with a career-high three hits and three RBIs.
Wesley closes out the regular season with a doubleheader at nationally-ranked Bridgewater (Va.) at 1 pm on May 4, followed by a single game at Randolph-Macon at 1 pm on May 5.
