Baseball Can't Hold Leads at #19 Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Wesley College's baseball team held a lead in both games against No. 19 Bridgewater (Va.) but came up short as the Eagles defeated the Wolverines, 7-4, in the opener and 3-1 in game two on Saturday afternoon at Jopson Field.

After falling behind, 1-0 after the third inning in game one, Wesley (20-19) scored twice in the fourth on a RBI double by Cory Smith and a single by Morgan Rupp.

Bridgewater (33-11) retook the lead with three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth, followed by two in the seventh to take  five-run lead. The Wolverines threatened to rally, scoring twice in the eighth on RBIs by Matt Robles and Jon Carlson but were unable to drive in more.

Rob Diamond took the loss for Wesley, allowing just two earned runs over the first five innings. Anthony Coniglio struck out the side in the eighth after Andrew Cooper threw a pair of innings.

Robles had his second two-hit game of the day and scored Wesley's only run in game two, which gave the Wolverines a 1-0 in the third.  Robles started the inning with an one-out single before stealing second and scoring on a pair of wild pitches.

The Eagles scored all of their runs in the fifth off Zach Stuart, who allowed three earned runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings.  Jeff Norwood allowed just one hit over the final 2.2 innings in relief.

A trip to Randolph-Macon on Sunday, April 5 at 1 pm concluded the 2013 season for Wesley.
