DOVER, Del. – A walk-off double by Cory Smith in the bottom of the ninth gave Wesley College's baseball team a 3-2 victory over New Jersey City University on Sunday at Bob Reed Field. The Wolverines even their record at 3-3 while the Gothic Knights fall to 0-1.
With two outs in the final inning and Ron Morello at first, Smith's double sailed just over the head of the centerfielder which scored Morello all the way from first. Morello ran for Joe Hummel who led off the frame with a single, his second base knock of the day.
Wesley also got a run in the eighth to tie the score at two. Eric Speidel reached on an error to start the frame and then advanced two bases on a passed ball. Trevor Mears was then hit by a pitch with one out and promptly stole second before Matt Domian was plunked to load the bases. New Jersey City then brought in a relief pitcher and after Adam Darling fouled out, Stan Zulkowski chopped an infield single to score Speidel from third.
A trio of Wolverines pitchers allowed just three hits on the day. Eric Marrero got the start and allowed just one hit and an unearned run over six innings. Brad Walker allowed a run while striking out two in the seventh before Andrew Cooper (2-0) tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth.
Early in the game, Wesley held a 1-0 lead after Darling ripped a two out single up the middle in the fourth to score Mears from second. Mears had singled and stole second with one out earlier in the inning.
The Wolverines return to action on Wednesday, March 5 when they travel to take on CAC and Route 13 Rival Salisbury at 2:30 pm. The Sea Gulls are currently ranked 11th in the Nation.
