DOVER, Del. – Zach Stuart fanned seven batters to match a career-high and Andrew Cooper threw two scoreless innings to earn the save, leading the Wesley College baseball team to a 3-2 victory over Marymount (Va.) in Capital Athletic Conference action on Friday afternoon. The Wolverines now stand at 5-6 overall and 2-1 in the CAC while the Saints fall to 4-12 and 0-3 in league play.
Stuart (3-1) allowed just two runs over seven innings and did not walk a batter while Cooper struck out the final two Saints looking.
All of the scoring came in just two innings as the Wolverines scored three runs in the second off Marymount righthander Brandon Orbe. Adam Darling started the offense with a one-out single and Stan Zulkowski as well as Connor Springsteen followed with singles to load the bases. Tyler Hunter then hit a fly ball to centerfield which was long enough to score Darling from third to give Wesley a 1-0 lead.
Cory Smith then reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, scoring Zulkowski, and Eric Speidel finished the frame with an opposite field RBI single to drive in Springsteen. Speidel and Darling had two hits apiece on the day.
Marymount was able to get two runners across in the fifth as Orbe helped his own cause with an RBI single before Bret Phillips' RBI single. Phillips was caught at second base trying to extend his hit to a double to kill the rally.
Wesley goes on the road for three CAC games in two days, starting with a 12 doubleheader at Christopher Newport on March 15. The Wolverines will then head back north for a single-game against Route 13 Rival Salisbury at 2 pm on March 16.
