YORK, Pa. – Wesley College's baseball team rallied for a pair of runs in the ninth but it was not enough as the Wolverines fell to Christopher Newport, 6-2, on Saturday afternoon in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament at York's Jaquet Field. Wesley's (16-15) CAC Title hopes come to an end while the Captains (22-14) will play the Spartans at 4 pm in a CAC Elimination Game.
Trailing by six runs, the Wolverines were able to record a pair of runs on three hits in their final at bat. Conner Gobright and Matt Domian started the frame with back-to-back singles and Gobright advanced to third on Stan Zulkowski's fielder's choice. Adam Darling then drove in Gobright with a single to left field and after Cody Dmiterchik reached on an error to load the bases, Tyler Hunter drove in Zulkowski with a fielder's choice.
Christopher Newport was finally able to escape, sealing the victory when Eric Speidel flew out to left field.
Errors proved costly early in the game for Wesley as Zach Stuart got the call to start on the mound on just three days' rest. The Captains tacked on unearned runs off Stuart in the first and fourth inning before getting a pair of runs off Stuart in the sixth. Rob Mills relieved Stuart with one out in the sixth and retired the side with back-to-back groundouts.
Stuart got the loss for the Wolverines, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings and striking out six. Mills had a great outing in relief, allowing just one run in the seventh and tosses 2.2 innings. Andrew Cooper allowed another run in the ninth.
Jacob Vaughan went the distance for Christopher Newport, allowing two runs on six hits while fanning one.
Wesley hosts Neumann on Wednesday, April 23 at 4 pm.
