DOVER, Del. – Wesley College's baseball team routed Penn State Harrisburg, 10-1, in a Capital Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Bob Reed Field. Both teams now stand at 4-10 overall as the Wolverines move to 2-5 in the CAC while the Nittany Lions fall to 1-5 in league play.
Eric Willey threw a complete game for the Wolverines to earn his first win of the season. Willey allowed just one run on ten hits while striking out three on the day.
Willey got a lot of help from his offense which put up 14 hits, with three each coming off the bats of Tyler Hunter and Matt Domian in their five at bats. Trevor Mears and Conner Gobright also collected multi-hit games while Mike Calvarese drove in a pair of runs. Gobright also walked twice on the day.
After Willey got through the first with a double play ball, Wesley was quick to get on top tallying three runs in the first inning. Eric Speidel reached on an error to lead off the inning and Hunter followed with a single. Cory Smith then drew a free pass to load the bases and after a fielder's choice, Hunter scored on a passed ball. With two outs, KeAndre Jones also reached on a throwing error which allowed both Smith and Mears to score.
Penn State got on the board with a run in the third, but the Wolverines extended their lead with two runs in their half of the inning on an RBI groundout by Calvarese and Domian later scored on a wild pitch.
Smith drove in a run with a single in the fourth and Wesley added three more runs in the seventh as Calvarese drove in Domian, followed by RBI singles by Joe Hummel and Gobright. Jones also drove in a run in the eighth on a groundout to round out the scoring for the day.
The Wolverines travel to face Susquehanna on Thursday, March 26 in a 4 pm start.
