DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College Wolverines baseball team swept the Captains of Christopher Newport on a snowy, spring afternoon. Winning the first game 6-1 and taking the second, 7-4. The Wolverines advance to 6-10, 4-5 in CAC play, while the Captains drop to 10-9, 4-7 in conference action.
Matt Domian was the star of game one. Domian was four of four at the plate with two double, two RBI's and one run in the opener. While the game started slowly for the Wolverines, Domian managed to score the first run in the bottom of the fourth after Mike Calvarese forced an error by the Captains second basemen. A failed pick-off attempt on Calvarese saw Keandre Jones reach home to score the second run of the inning. Tyler Hunter did all the work himself in the bottom of the fifth, reaching on a single to right, stealing second and then making it home on a passed ball. The Captains picked up a run in the top of the seventh but the Wolverines responded with three runs to round out the scoring in the game. Connor Springsteen picked up his first win of the year, allowing one run on one hit while striking out three in his eight innings on the mound.
A double from Jones, 3-4 at the plate in game two, in the bottom of the first in game two, saw both Domian and Hunter reach the plate. A two out rally in the top of the third, saw the Captains tie the game up at two. Hunter responded in the bottom of the fourth with a single to center that scored Connor Gobright. The Captains would tie it up again in the top of the sixth off of a pair of Wolverine errors. Jones came to the rescue in the bottom of the sixth with a single that saw another two runs score. Christopher Newport put another tally on the board in the top of the seventh but Brett McCulley and Brad Walker would shut the Captains scoring down in the eighth and ninth. Sam Meck got the first win of his career, allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out five, and Walker earned his second save of the year.
The Wolverines face off against the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University on Tuesday, March 31 at 3:30 PM.
