DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College Wolverines baseball team took two games from the York College (Pa) Spartans in spectacular fashion on Senior Day at Bob Reed Field on Saturday afternoon. Wesley ran away with the opener in a 17-4 finish while game two went all the way to the final pitch in the bottom of the ninth. The Wolverines advance to 8-11 overall, 6-6 in conference, while the Spartans fall to 8-10, 4-7 in CAC play.
Wesley honored seven seniors in the double header and those seniors made an outstanding showing in their day. Senior third baseman, Connor Gobright, scored the first run of the game on a Joe Hummel single. Three more runs would score in the inning to give the Wolverines a 4-0 lead. Not happy with just four runs, Wesley truly exploded in the bottom of the fourth. The inning opened with a double by Gobright followed by a Hummel sacrifice bunt. Ron Morello would reach first on a fielder's choice as the Spartans attempted to catch Gobright at the plate but were unsuccessful. Eric Speidel reached on an error by the third base before senior center fielder, Tyler Hunter, placed a perfect bunt down the third base line that caused another York error, allowing two runs to score. The Wolverines would put a total of 11 runs on the board in the fourth, an inning that saw all nine batters score. York would find a way to tally one run in the sixth and three in the eighth but it was not enough to surpass Wesley. Connor Springsteen takes his second win of the year while Joel Kenney took the loss for the Spartans.
Game two was a completely different story. Wesley managed to get on the board first when senior catcher, Matt Domian, got a base hit that saw Speidel cross the plate. York took the lead in the fourth with two homeruns, scoring three runs. Gobright responded with a homer of his own to weaken York's lead to one run at 3-2. Senior second baseman, Cory Smith, opened the bottom of the sixth with a triple to center field. Domian hit the tying run in in the following at bat. The Wolverines would take the lead in the seventh when three of the seniors, Hunter, Smith, and Domian, each tallied a run. Domian scoring off a triple by Gobright. The Wolverines had a comfortable lead going into the ninth but the Spartans were not going to go quietly. After a double by Logan Countryman that narrowed Wesley's lead to one run, York had Steve Miller pinch hit, a decision that proved wise as Miller cleared the left field fence, putting York ahead with only half an inning left of play. The Wesley College seniors could not be silenced and were not planning to lose on their day. Smith imitated his sixth inning performance, with an identical triple to center. Domian then singled to short right field, scoring Smith. Unwilling to face Gobright again, York intentionally walked Gobright. Hummel was also intentionally walked, loading the bases with Morello coming to the plate. With the count at 0-2, Morello hit a small shot at the shortstop, who was playing in in hopes of keeping Wesley from taking the game. Morello's shot was just enough as Domian streaked for home, dove away from the throw, and scored the go ahead run. Staying with the theme, Senior closer, Brett McCulley, takes his second win of the season.
The Wolverines travel to Casey Field in Covington, VA in a double header against Southern Virginia University beginning at 12:00 PM on Monday, April 6.
