DOVER, Del. - The Wesley College Baseball team saw their nine-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday afternoon when they fell 8-4 to Capital Athletic Conference foe St. Mary's College at Bob Reed Field.
Eric Speidel went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI but was the only Wolverine with multiple hits. KeAndre Jones had three walks and a pair of stolen bases while Joe Hummel went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and two runs scored. Cody Simet went 4.1 innings and allowed seven earned runs before being relieved by Andrew Weaver, who tossed 4.2 innings allowing just one run on four hits to keep Wesley in contention.
Wesley fell behind 2-0 in the top of the third inning, but responded with a run in the bottom of the frame. Hummel led off with a single and moved to third on a pair of groundouts before Speidel drove him in with a single through the left side, making it 2-1.
The Seahawks broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning, using five hits strung together to take a 7-1 lead. Wesley responded once again with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on just two hits. Hummel and Eric Willey reach on back-to-back walks to open the inning. Cody Dmiterchik sacrificed them into scoring position. Hummel scored on a wild pitch and Speidel was able to bring home a run on a single. The shortstop then swiped second and third before scoring on a Jones groundout to make it 7-4.
Wesley threatened to tie the game with runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn't bring home any more runs as the Seahawks extended their lead to 8-4 for the victory.
The Wolverines move to 18-13 on the season with a 10-6 record in the CAC. The team will take on Susquehanna on Thursday before they travel to Christopher Newport on Saturday for another conference doubleheader.
