HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Wesley College baseball team dropped their season opener on Saturday to the Stevenson Mustangs, 9-7 in their first game of the Floyd B. Wilcox Tournament hosted by Hampden-Sydney College.
Wesley took an early 4-0 lead behind two runs in the first and second innings. Chris Seibert doubled home Will Barton and Chris Bramble in the first. Bramble knocked home Jarrett Wallace and Jason Boc with a double of his own in the second inning.
Stevenson scored eight unanswered in the middle innings to take the 8-4 lead over Wesley.
After Wallace walked with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, back-to-back singles by Bramble and Cody Dmiterchik would load the bases with two outs. A passed ball by the catcher would allow Wallace to score from third to cut into the Stevenson lead.
Stevenson would get that run back in the top of the seventh when Billy Small singled home Jacob Norris to make it a 9-5 game.
Wesley would attempt a comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Wolverines loaded the bases with one out, Jordan Marruci would ground into the fielder's choice, but Stevenson would throw the ball away and allow Seibert and Michael Piccirillo to score on the play. Stevenson retired the next batter and hold on to the win.
Bramble and Seibert both registered four hits, two runs batted in and a run scored in the loss.
The Wolverines (0-1) will play a doubleheader tomorrow to wrap up the Wilcox Tournament. The Wolverines open with the Moravian Greyhounds at 11 a.m. before taking on the host Hampden-Sydney Tigers at 3 p.m.
