PURCELLVILLE, Va. – The Wesley College baseball team fell in a doubleheader to the No. 21 Frostburg St. Bobcats in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) action. The games were played a Fireman's Field in Purcellville, Va. due to inclement weather in Western Maryland.
Wesley dropped a heartbreaker to Frostburg St., 7-6 in the opener of the doubleheader.
Wesley opened the scoring in the top of the third inning when William Foster cleared the bases with a grand slam to right field to give Wesley the 4-0 lead.
Frostburg scored seven unanswered runs to take the 7-5 lead heading into the ninth inning. Wesley was looking to force extra innings. Wesley got the bases loaded with one out. Michael Piccirillo got Wallace to score from third on an RBI groundout. After an intentional walk to Foster loaded the bases again, Frostburg got out of the inning with a strikeout to end the game-tying and go-ahead runs stranded.
Foster collected two hits with a double and a grand slam. Chris Seibert went a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish with a run scored. Wallace also tallied a pair of hits with two runs scored in the loss.
Both teams combined for 36 runs, 32 walks and 27 hits in a 3:49 marathon nightcap with Frostburg St. registered the 26-10 win over Wesley to take the doubleheader sweep.
Barton, Piccirillo, Foster, Wallace and Edward Hogan each notched two hits in the contest.
Wesley scored all of their runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Wallace singled up the middle to plate Hogan from second base. A batter later, Barton singled up the middle to score Cory Joines from second base.
Eight runs crossed home as Wesley batted around in the seventh inning. Kevin Schmitt drew a bases-loaded walk to allow Seibert to score from third base. Hogan then singled to right-center field to bring home Foster and Piccirillo. Two batters later, Barton found the right-center gap for a two-run double. Wallace scored in the next at-bat on a wild pitch. Barton came around to score when Seibert reached on a fielder's choice. Seibert scored for the second time in the inning on an RBI double to center field by Foster.
The Wolverines will be back in action on Sunday when they take on the York Spartans for a CAC doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
