Baseball splits doubleheader with York

YORK, Pa. – The Wesley College baseball team splits a twin bill on the road with the York (Pa.) Spartans on Sunday.

Wesley outlasted York, 7-6 in game one of the doubleheader.

York opened the scoring in the second before Wesley responded with a four-run third inning. Chris Seibert pulled a two-run shot down the right field line to give Wesley the 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, Jarrett Wallace capped the inning with a two-run single to score Kevin Schmitt and William Foster with two outs in the third inning, which gave Wesley the 4-1 lead.

After York cut the lead to 4-3 with runs in the fourth and seventh innings, Wesley added three insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning to make it a 7-3 game. Michael Piccirillo hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Cody Dmiterchik from third base. Foster scored later in the inning on a wild pitch. Kevin Schmitt came around to score on an RBI single from Deshawn Aiken.

York scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning but Alex Marrs shut down the Spartans in the final 1.1 innings of the game to pick up save and give Wesley the win.

Aiken went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Seibert, Foster and Wallace each notched a pair of hits. Seibert drove in two with his two-run homer in the third while Wallace had a two-run single in the third.

Sam Meck earned his second win of the season with seven strong innings of work. Meck struck out two while scattering nine hits, three walks and three runs.

Wesley were the unfortunate losers in a back-and-forth battle with York, falling 8-7 to the Spartans in the finale.

Wesley struck first in the top of the first inning. After Will Barton led off the game, Seibert brought him in with an RBI single through the left side. York nodded the game at one in the bottom half of the first.

Aiken came home from first base on a single to right field by Wallace in the second inning to give Wesley the 2-1 lead over York.

York took the 5-2 lead with a four-run third inning but Wesley tied up the game at five in the fifth in a big way when Barton cleared the bases with a three-run bomb to left field.

Aiken gave Wesley the 6-5 lead in the fifth with an RBI double to right field to score Piccirillo from second base. York took a 7-6 lead with a two-run sixth inning, but Seibert tied the game at seven with a single to left field to plate Barton.

York was able to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Cody Simet was able to get the double play when Christian Bilan grounded into the 6-2-3 twin-killing. After an intentional walk to Jack Berry, Collin Crowell was hit by pitch which plated Zach Hossler from third base and put York up 8-7. Wesley was unable to mount a comeback in the ninth.

Seibert went 3-for-4 in the nightcap with two RBIs. Barton scored three times and drove in three runs on a home run in the fifth inning. Barton, Aiken and Wallace all had multi-hit games in the doubleheader finale.

The Wolverines will be back at home on Tuesday when they finish their season series with the Salisbury Sea Gulls on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
