IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Wesley College baseball team battled in an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader against Immaculata but dropped both games to the Mighty Macs on Saturday.
Game 1 – Immaculata 7, Wesley 5
After falling behind 2-0 after Immaculata scored a run in the first and second innings, Wesley scored four runs in the third inning. Alexander Weber led off the inning with a single to right center field. Following a sacrifice bunt by Dustin Sutton, John Joines smacked a double to left to score Weber. Two batters later, William Foster hit an RBI single to right to plate Joines. After William Musser single, Jason Boc brought two runs home on a double to left center.
Immaculata tied the game at four in the bottom of the third on back-to-back RBI doubles by Tom Prato and Cameron Delisle but Wesley retook the lead in the top of the fourth when Weber doubled then came around to score from third base two batters later on a wild pitch.
Wesley couldn't hold on to their one-run lead as Immaculata scored three runs in the sixth and retired the Wesley side in the seventh to take the doubleheader opener.
Joines, Musser and Weber all notched a pair of hits for Wesley. Weber added two runs scored and a double while Boc brought in two runs on his double in the third inning.
Kevin Schmitt scattered eight hits and seven runs (five earned) in 5.1 innings of work. He struck out four Mighty Macs.
Game 2 – Immaculata 9, Wesley 7
Wesley belted 16 hits in the second game but left 14 runners on to fall to Immaculata, 9-7.
Foster got Wesley on the board first in the first inning when he plated John Joines on an RBI single through the left side. However, Immaculata gained the 3-1 lead over Wesley behind runs in the first, second and third innings.
Wesley nodded the game at three in the fourth inning behind a sacrifice fly by Weber to score Cory Joines and an RBI double by Jordan Marucci to bring John Joines all the way from first base. Immaculata responded with five runs in the bottom half of the fourth and a run in the fifth to take a 9-3 lead on Wesley.
Showing their might, Wesley notched three runs in the seventh to cut the Immaculata lead in half. Foster and Musser started the inning with back-to-back singles before Foster scored on an error by the Immaculata pitcher. Boc would allow Musser to score from third on an RBI infield single. Two batters later, Weber would bring Boc around on a single to right.
Wesley continued to claw their way back into the game with a run in the ninth on a two-out single down the right-field line by John Joines to score his brother, Cory from second base to make it a 9-7 game but that was as close as Wesley would get to the Immaculata lead.
Dustin Sutton struck out five in his 4.2 innings of relief.
Wesley heads to Dallas, Pa. on Tuesday to take on the Misericordia Cougars in a non-conference contest. The game is set for a 3:30 p.m. start.
