DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College baseball team split a doubleheader with the Marywood Pacers on Saturday. Since Marywood and Wesley had the same record and the same run differential in the conference, Wesley clinched the sixth seed in the upcoming Atlantic East Conference Championship Tournament with their win in the second game of the doubleheader.
Game One: Marywood 3, Wesley 2
After surrendering the first run of the game in the top of the first, Alexander Weber capitalized on a passed ball to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning.
Marywood took the lead back from Wesley in the top of the fourth inning after a single to left field by Anthony Navaro that scored Michael Tempel and Jake Schuster to give Marywood the 3-2 lead. Wesley loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fourth but couldn't push the tying run across.
Weber and Cory Joines led Wesley in game one with two hits apiece.
On the mound, Kevin Schmitt sat down six batters and only gave up one earned run in his second complete game of the season.
Game Two: Wesley 10, Marywood 2
Marywood scored their only runs of game two in the third inning after Trevor Powers knocked a single to center field bringing home Morgan Theobald and Bubba Klein to give Marywood the 2-1 advantage.
A pair of RBI singles from Boc and William Foster gave Wesley back the one-run lead, 3-2 in the bottom half of the third inning.
Wesley added three runs in the fifth inning, including Cory Joines converting on a squeeze bunt to allow Boc to score from third base for a 7-2 Wesley lead.
Three more runs of insurance in the eighth, all with two outs, to push the Wesley lead to 10-2. William Musser got the scoring going in the inning with a single to left to allow Weber to touch home. A batter later, Boc connected on his second two-run hit of the game with a single to center to bring home Musser and John Joines.
David Whitlock tallied two strikeouts and shut down Marywood during his five innings of relief for his first collegiate win on the mound.
As the sixth seed, Wesley will travel to compete in Pod A of the Atlantic East Conference Championship Tournament, starting on Friday, May 3. Wesley opens with the Pod A host and top-seeded Cabrini on Friday before taking on the fourth-seeded Immaculata Mighty Macs. Game times are TBD.
