Dover, Del. – The Wolverines fought hard to secure their first victory of the season in Game one against Cairn University on Saturday. The game went into extra innings as a walk-off RBI double sent home the winning run in the bottom of the 9th.
In their first scoring opportunity, the Wolverines got on the board on a Highlander error, scoring Jarrett Wallace for a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning. Another Cairn error in the 4th would send home Jason Boc allowing Wesley to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
Cairn's bats began to show life as they scored on a Wesley error in the 5th inning. They would come within just one run while keeping the Wolverines on their toes at 2-1 heading into the final innings of the game.
At the top of the 7th, Wesley switched out starting pitcher Hunter Barr for Joey Strazza. Strazza hit one Highlanders batter and walked another, quickly finding himself in an uncomfortable jam with no outs. Catcher John Joines allowed a passed ball for the Highlanders to get a couple of runners into scoring position. Cairn would go on to score two runs in the inning, leading the Wolverines 3-2.
With Wesley down to their final out, the Wolverines scored a run on a Highlanders balk, with Wallace being the tying run. The game would go on to extra innings.
In the 9th inning, Dustin Sutton would slap a single to right field. Joines came to bat and knocked Sutton in with a walk-off RBI double, giving Wesley its first win of the season.
Wallace got on base with two walks and scored two runs. Jacob Meisel went 2-3 on the day.
The Baseball team improves their season record to 1-2 with their first win today. Wesley looks to maintain this energy in Game 2.
Wesley put up seven hits in response to Cairn's six, but fell 5-3 in game two. The team was hoping to post a .500 record on the season but instead drop to 1-3 in the first couple of opening series of the season.
Cairn put up two runs in the first two innings, while Wesley capitalized on a Highlander error in the 2nd making the score 2-1 with plenty of baseball left to play. Cairn's bats came alive in the 3rd when they posted three runs on an RBI single, double, and a couple of Wolverine errors to distance themselves 5-1.
Wesley looked to be on the verge of a comeback when Jacob Meisel batted a dribbler back to the Highlanders' pitcher. As the pitcher committed an error, Jordan Marucci scored. Kevin Schmitt came up to bat and lined a single into center scoring Jason Boc from third base. Wesley couldn't continue the rally as the Cairn found their three outs.
Meisel went 2-3 in the game while driving in a run. Schmitt and Jarrett Wallace had one run batted in each.
Cole Edwards struck out five Highlanders while giving up one earned run on six hits. Cairn took advantage of crucial Wesley errors that landed them a five spot in the final box score.
