Bret Underwood is entering his eighth season as the head coach of the Wesley College baseball team in the 2018-19 academic year. He has been on the Wesley baseball staff for 13 years, starting as an assistant coach from 2006-11.  In the summer of 2018, he was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities.

Honors / Accomplishments as head coach

  • Teams have qualified for the CAC Championship Tournament six consecutive years (2012-17)

      • Mears led all of Division III in runs per game (1.65), runs batted in per game (1.59) and stolen bases per game (1.21) while tying for the lead in batting average (.500)
      • Led all three divisions in batting average, runs per game and stolen bases per game
    • Chris Seibert – Third Team – 2018
  • Led Trey Mears to ECAC South Division III Player of the Year and CAC Co-Player of the Year honors in 2017. Mears also won the CAC Rookie of the Year award in 2013

  • Feb. 18, 2012: Picked up his first wins as the head coach with a doubleheader sweep over Penn St. Harrisburg
  • May 7, 2012: Tied the then-program record for wins with a walk-off win over Methodist
  • Feb. 23, 2017: Wesley scored 34 runs against Valley Forge, a program record
  • April 8, 2017: A conference doubleheader sweep of nationally-ranked Christopher Newport

Prior to Wesley

Underwood was a four-year starter at Delaware State University at first base. One of the most prolific hitters in school history and was named first-team All-MEAC in his three final seasons. He still holds the Hornets career record for hits (272), while ranking in the top three in home runs (50), runs batted in (224), runs scored (185), and extra-base hits (107) while hitting .354. As a sophomore, he finished 19th in Division I with 77 RBIs, which is also a school record.

After completing his senior year at Delaware State in 2004, he signed a free agent contract with the Boston Red Sox.

Prior to Delaware State, Underwood attended Dickinson High School in Wilmington, Del., where he was a two-time all-state selection.

Personal

Underwood will be inducted into the Delaware State Athletic Hall of Fame in the Fall of 2018. He lives in Frederica with his wife Lindsay and their two children.
