DOVER, Del. - The Wesley College Football offices were buzzing on Tuesday morning with news that the Green Bay Packers were interested in the Wolverines' quarterback draft prospect Joe Callahan. A news release from the Journal Sentinel, a Wisconsin-based paper reported the Packers' interest on Monday evening.
The Wesley College quarterback is hoping to join a pro club in the coming days with the NFL Draft scheduled to begin on Thursday, April 28. Callahan put up eye-popping numbers in the 2015 football season, setting several records including the NCAA Division III mark for most passing yards in a season with 5,063.
If Callahan were to be drafted this weekend, he would be the first Division III quarterback to be picked in the NFL draft since Larry Wanke of John Carroll University was taken by the New York Giants in the 12th round of the 1991 NFL Draft. Last season, Ali Marpet, an offensive lineman from Division III affiliate Hobart, was selected in the second round, 61st overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The pick marked the highest selection of a Division III student-athlete in NFL history.
Joe Callahan hopes to be given the opportunity to perform at the top professional level. With the numbers he put up this season, it wouldn't shock anyone at Wesley to hear his name called in the draft this weekend.
