DOVER, Del. - Starr. Favre. Rodgers... Callahan. Wesley College Football graduate Joe Callahan was signed on Saturday evening by the Green Bay Packers. Wolverine fans hope that he will catch on in the Great North during the preseason and make a few Lambeau Leaps in his career.
The Green Bay Packers showed interest in Callahan early last week, and eventually signed him as he went undrafted through Saturday. "It was a dream come true," said the quarterback after signing.
"I was nervous watching the draft," he said. "I didn't want the Packers to take a quarterback. I thought I had a chance to sign with them. I saw they didn't and hoped I would get a call after the draft."
Turns out, he did get that call.
Joe will head to Green Bay to meet with coaches and teammates before beginning preseason training and rookie camps.
Joe turned some heads during the 2015 season with eye-popping stat lines on his way to the Gagliardi Trophy. The 6-foot-1 gunslinger passed for an NCAA Division III record 5,063 yards and threw for 55 touchdowns on his way to earning the award for the nation's best player at the Division III level.
Head Coach Mike Drass was thrilled with the news that his quarterback had signed an NFL contract. "We are excited and proud of Joe. He has worked incredibly hard for the opportunity," said Drass. "The Packers are getting a great player with an unbelievable work ethic."
Callahan led the Wolverines to an 11-2 record, including their 11th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and their eighth consecutive NCAA Quarterfinal berth. The Absecon, N.J. native was a fan of the Packers and Brett Favre growing up. Now he'll be a part of the Green and Gold.
