DOVER, Del. - For the second straight season, The Sporting News has ranked the Wesley College Football team sixth in their Preseason Top 25 released in their latest edition of the College Football Preview. The Wolverines have received a Preseason All-American nod for the second straight season as well with wide receiver Bryce Shade receiving Preseason All-American honors.
The Wolverines finished last season as New Jersey Athletic Conference Co-Champions in their first year of membership in the NJAC. The team went 11-2 overall, qualifying for their 11th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Wesley beat Framingham State in the NCAA First Round and survived a shootout at Johns Hopkins to reach the NCAA Quarterfinals for the seventh straight season before being eliminated by eventual national champion Mount Union.
The squad graduated Gagliardi Trophy winning quarterback Joe Callahan along with four other offensive starters, but return weapons at the skill positions led by Shade and running back Jamar Baynard. Shade was named a Preseason All-American by the Sporting News after pulling in a program single-season record 83 catches for 1,427 yards receiving and 17 receiving touchdowns. The shifty slot receiver also ran for 215 yards and averaged 15.1 yards per punt return. His 2,013 all-purpose yards last season rank second-most in Wesley single-season history.
The Wolverines will begin their season on Friday, Sept. 2 when they play host to Delaware Valley College in the team's only non-conference contest of the year. Wesley begins their quest to reclaim their NJAC championship with a home game against Frostburg State on Sept. 10.
