DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College football team was ranked No. 11 in the 2017 D3football.com Preseason Top 25 Poll, as announced by the website on Monday.
Wesley received 365 points and was the highest ranked school in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) as three other NJAC schools received votes in the poll. Wesley will play No. 17 Frostburg State on the road on Oct. 7. Kean, who received four votes in the Top 25, will come to Drass Field at Scott D. Miller Stadium for Homecoming on Oct. 14. Wesley will host Route 13 rival Salisbury, who totaled 12 points in the poll, on Nov. 4 in the penultimate game of the regular season.
The D3football.com Top 25 is voted on by a panel of 25 coaches, Sports Information Directors and media members from across the country.
Defending national champions Mary Hardin-Baylor earned the top spot in the poll with 606 points and 16 first-place votes. Mount Union placed second with 570 points and three first-place votes. UW-Whitewater (561, four first-place votes) and UW-Oshkosh (556, two first-place votes) were slated third and fourth respectively and received the remaining first-place votes.
Wesley has made an appearance in the D3football.com Preseason Top 25 every year since 2006 and has been ranked in the Top 15 in each of those 11 years.
The 2017 team returns eight starters on defense and seven starters on offense from a 2016 squad that went 9-3 overall and notched their second consecutive share of the NJAC Regular Season Championship and their 12th straight trip to the NCAA Championship Tournament.
Wesley will open the 2017 schedule on the road on Thursday, Aug. 31 when they face the Delaware Valley Aggies, who were ranked No. 20 in the preseason poll. Kickoff from Doylestown, Pa. is scheduled for 7 p.m.
