Smith named Wesley College Linebackers Coach

DOVER, Del. – Wesley College head football coach Mike Drass announced the hiring of Arthur Smith III as the team's linebackers coach.

Smith comes from Montana State University-Northern, where he served as the linebackers coach and assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Lights since August 2014. In two of his three years at Montana State-Northen, one of his linebackers finished in the top 10 in the Frontier Conference in tackles.

Prior to his time at Montana State-Northern, Smith began his coaching career at his alma mater, the University of Mount Union, where he served as the assistant linebacker coach in 2012. During his year with Mount Union, the Purple Raiders won the Division III National Championship and Smith coached Charles Dieuseul to his second D3football.com All-America honors at linebacker.

"Coach Smith was highly recommended from many colleagues in the coaching ranks," Drass said. "(Smith's) knowledge of defense and personality meshed well with the philosophy of the coaching staff and the team as a whole. I want to welcome him to the football family here at Wesley."

Following his tenure at Mount Union, Smith was the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Miami Beach Senior High School from 2013-14.

Smith had a successful playing career for the Purple Raiders, where he was a two-year starter at linebacker and played in two national championship games. He was named First Team All-Ohio Athletic Conference linebacker in 2011.

Smith played professionally from 2012-15 in several indoor football leagues, including the Indoor Football League for the Allen Wranglers, Wyoming Calvary and Billings Wolves, Marian Blue Wolves of the Continental Indoor Football League and the Amarillo Venom of the Lone Star Football League.

"I would like to thank Coach Drass for the opportunity to join the coaching staff here at Wesley," Smith stated. "I'm really excited to be a part of the winning tradition that is here at Wesley and I'm ready to build on the success and compete for a national championship."

Smith earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education with a minor in health and education from the University of Mount Union in December 2012. Smith then earned his Master of Science in education, instruction and learning from Montana State University-Northern in May of 2017.
