DOVER, Del. – Wesley College senior offensive lineman Matt Gono was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Atlanta Falcons following the NFL Draft on Saturday.
"We are so excited for Matt, his family and the Falcons," said head coach Mike Drass. "He's going to work very hard to make the team and we can't be more proud and happy for him."
Gono looks to be the fourth Wesley College football to make the preseason roster of an NFL team and the second to make the active roster and appear in a regular season game after Joe Callahan of the Green Bay Packers.
After one of the most successful careers in a Wesley uniform, Gono was selected to participate in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in January at the historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena. He impressed scouts with his performance in multiple positions on the offensive line and was commended by the commentators and coaches alike. He helped the American team notch 115 rushing yards in one of the premier college football all-star games in the country.
Wesley held a Pro Day for NFL scouts for Gono and other NFL-caliber Wolverines on March 22. Gono shined with 17 NFL scouts in attendance. He measured at 6-4, 316 pounds and ran 40-yard dash In 5.10 seconds into the wind. Gono also benched 225 pounds 26 times and broad jumped 118" (9-10), which would have put him second in the event at the NFL combine.
A Gagliardi Trophy semifinalist, Gono was named a First Team All-America by the American Football Coaches Association and the Associated Press and a Third Team All-America by D3football.com in 2017. Gono was also a D3football.com All-America honoree in 2015.
Gono is a three-time D3Football.com All-East Region and New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) First Team honoree. He is also a two-time All-Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) All-Star.
Gono did not allow a sack all year and helped lead the Wolverines to the best offense in the NJAC with 5,295 total yards, including 2,477 yards on the ground
