UNION, N.J. – The No. 7/10 Wesley College football team rebounded well after their tough loss last week to roll to a 54-6 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) road win over the Kean Cougars.
The offense moved effectively down the field, totaling 551 yards of total offense. E.J. Lee combined for three total touchdowns. Lee ran the ball 16 times for 117 yards and two touchdowns on the ground while also recording a 40-yard touchdown catch on a bubble screen.
Khaaliq Burroughs went 21-for-27 passing for 312 yards and three touchdowns. Two of his touchdown passes went to Ruhann Peele. Peele reeled in seven passes for 104 yards. Alex Kemp caught four passes for 62 yards. Andrew Eagle recorded three catches for 30 yards.
The Wesley defense held Kean to 190 yards of offense with nine tackles for loss and three sacks. Coray Williams led the defense with seven tackles and an interception. Nazir Williams, Jay Holmes and Jalund Johnson each recorded five tackles. Shymere Vessels, Will Scott and Jason Stewart collected four tackles a piece. Vessels registered 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble. Vincent Ebron also notched a forced fumble.
The return game of Wesley was held under 200 yards for the first time since Week 3 against TCNJ. Marcellus Pack had two kickoff returns for 71 yards with a long of 54 yards. Corterris Simpson returned his only punt for 26 yards.
Nick Bruhn converted six-of-seven point-after attempts.
After a three-and-out on Kean's opening possession, Wesley drove 66 yards in 10 plays when an E.J. Lee fumble at the goal line was recovered by offensive tackle Devin Miller in the end zone for a touchdown.
Ruhann Peele reeled in a 21-yard touchdown catch from Burroughs late in the first quarter, after breaking a tackle at the 10-yard line.
Early in the second quarter, Kean capitalized on a Wesley turnover with a 33-yard diving touchdown catch by David Patterson from Rylan Pangborn. The point after attempt by Kean was blocked by Daquay Harris-Winbush to keep Wesley up 14-6.
On the ensuing kickoff, Marcellus Pack's 54-yard return gave Wesley great field position at the Kean 41-yard line. Two plays later, Lee would take a bubble screen 40 yards down the Wesley sideline for his first receiving touchdown of the season.
Wesley drove down the field on their next drive of the game with a 10-play, 93 yard drive that was capped off by a Lee four-yard touchdown run to give Wesley a 28-6 lead heading into the halftime break.
Wesley's first drive of the third quarter was a seven-play, 88-yard drive that ended when Lee took a read option 28 yards for a touchdown. On Wesley's next drive was another eight-play drive which was highlighted by a Peele 25-yard touchdown catch from Burroughs, his second of the game.
Abe Mansaray was able to get Wesley's third touchdown of the third quarter with 20 seconds left in the third when he scampered in from five yards out to give Wesley a 47-6 lead over Kean at the end of the third quarter.
Shawny'e Jones gave Wesley added insurance in the early part of the third quarter when he picked off Rylan Pangborn and returned it 12 yards for Wesley's first defensive pick-six of 2018.
Wesley (5-1, 4-1 NJAC) will continue their two-game New Jersey swing when they head to Glassboro, N.J. next Saturday to take on the Rowan Profs. Kickoff from South Jersey is set for 2 p.m.
