DOVER, Del. - Lauren Correll scored twice in the first half as No. 2 Salisbury defeated Wesley College in a key battle atop the Capital Athletic Conference field hockey standings.
The two teams entered contest with matching 3-0 CAC marks. With the win, the Sea Gulls (11-1) are the lone undefeated team left in conference play, while the Wolverines (10-4) are a half game behind Mary Washington for second place. Wesley defeated the Eagles and holds the tie breaker should the teams tie for second place.
Correll scored what proved to be the game winner just 1:30 into contest. After Caitlin Walker scored to make it 2-0, Correll tacked on her second of the game in the 25th minute as the Sea Gulls led by three at the half.
Caitlyn Ruffus added a late goal at 68:40 with an assist from Kristina Fusco, her second helper of the afternoon.
Wesley's Sarah Johnson (Honeybrook, Pa./Twin Valley) made 18 saves in the contest, while Salisbury keeper Anna Cooke recorded a shutout.
The Wesley defense also got help from Samantha Russum (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) in the form of a defensive save.
The Wolverines will look to get back into the win column on with a home CAC game against York (Pa.) on October 15.
