DOVER, Del. - York (Pa.) College got a goal in the 23rd minute off a corner as the Spartans defeated Wesley College 1-0 in Capital Athletic Conference field hockey.
Casey Lawrence took a penalty corner for York (9-6, 3-2 CAC) then got herself into position to redirect a shot by Allison Roush to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead heading into the half.
Wesley (10-5, 3-2 CAC) took control of the action in the second half, taking eight shots and limiting York to just one. But the Wolverines could not get anyting past the Spartans' Claire Rekitzke, who made eight saves to notch the shutout.
Sarah Johnson (Honeybrook, Pa./Twin Valley) made two saves in goal for Wesley, while Dana Keller (Dover, Del./Dover) was credited with a defensive save.
With the loss, Wesley is now tied with the Spartans for third in the CAC at 3-2. York would hold the tiebreaker with the Wolverines based on head-to-head competition should the two squads end the year tied. Both teams are just one game behind Mary Washington in the team standings for second place.
Wesley is back in action on October 18 against Frostburg State at 2:00 PM in non-conference action.
