Haverford Topples Wolverines
DOVER, Del. - Haverford broke a scoreless tie midway through the second half and added an insurance goal to hold off Wesley College 2-1 in non-conference field hockey.
Neither team scored in the first half. In the 16th minute, Haverford was awarded a penalty stroke, but Christie Quake could not convert. Later in the half, the Wolverines had a breakaway attempt thwarted by a Ford defender just before Wesley could get off a shot.
In the second half, Elizabeth Groom (Bear, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) made a diving save to turn away a shot by Christine Gall, one of 15 stops on the night for the junior. Less than two minutes later, however, Gall took an assist from Bryn Bissey to put Haverford ahead 1-0 at 49:44.
The Fords were awarded another penalty stroke in the 70th minute and Roxanne Jaffe converted for a 2-0 advantage.
The Wolverines broke up the shut out when Tristin Burris (Camden, Del./Polytech) tipped one in off an assist from Abigail Hill (Dover, Del./Lake Forest).
Sydney Hyder made three saves for the Fords.
Wesley will look rebound on September 9 with a road trip to William Paterson.
