Captains Sink Wesley

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Wesley College field hockey team was looking to knock off its second straight nationally ranked foe, but No. 13 Christopher Newport defended its home field for a 2-0 final in favor of the Captains.

Fresh off a win over No. 12 Mary Washington just 48 hours earlier, the Wolverines (5-2) fell behind 1-0 on a penalty stroke by Lauren Cherry just under 11 minutes into the action.

Caitlin Cahill added an insurance goal for Christopher Newport (3-2) in the second half, taking a feed from Chrissy Kurecki on a penalty corner less than five minutes after play resumed.

The game was otherwise a defensive struggle as the squads combined for just 10 shots, including just two for the Wolverines.

Elizabeth Groom (Bear, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) stopped four shots for Wesley, while Dana Keller (Dover, Del./Dover) added a defensive save.

Jaime Dowling turned away both Wolverine shots to pick up the shutout.

Wesley is back in action against Juniata on September 20 in a neutral site game to be played at Lower Dauphin High School in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania.
