Wesley Outlasts Spartans
YORK, Pa. - Wesley College used second half goals from Sheree Pleasanton (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) and Rachel Joyner (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) to dispatch York (Pa.) 2-1 on the road in Capital Athletic Conference field hockey action.
Neither team scored in the first half and it was not until Pleasanton beat the Spartans' Lydia Pirie in the middle of the 45th minute that either team found the back of the cage.
The Wolverines' (7-4, 3-0 CAC) stretched the lead to 2-0 less than two minutes later when Joyner added a goal.
York (5-6, 0-3 CAC) had two scoring opportunities in the 63rd and 64th minutes, but defensive saves by Victoria Dunbar (Hockessin, Del./Wilmington Christian) and Dana Keller (Dover, Del./Dover) negated the chances. The Spartans finally got on the board in the 66th minute when Madi Wilt scored unassisted, but the Wolverines held the Spartans without a shot on goal for the remainder of the contest to seal the win.
Wesley made the most of its chances, scoring on two of the team's 10 shots in the contest. York, meanwhile, managed just one goal on 20 shots.
Elizabeth Groom (Bear, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) picked up the start and made seven saves. Amanda Hudson (Frederica, Del./St. Thomas More) played the final 15 minutes and allowed one goal.
Pirie made three saves for the Spartans, while Danielle Gaitings added a defensive save.
With the win, Wesley remains undefeated at 3-0 in the conference, just a half game behind first place Salisbury.
