Field Hockey Celebrates double overtime win over #19 Lynchburg in season opener

DOVER, Del. – Gracie Daniels scored the game-winning goal with 1:37 left in the second overtime to give the Wesley College field hockey team a 2-1 victory over No. 19 Lynchburg College in the season opener on Saturday afternoon at Scott D. Miller Stadium.

A senior from Pocomoke, Md., Daniels scored as her and junior Meghan Groom had a two-on-one breakaway.  Groom drove in hard down the right side and as the goalkeeper charged, Groom fed Daniels on the left side for the score, her first career game-winner.

Wesley had to come-from-behind to overtake the Hornets, who took a 1-0 lead just minutes into the second half on a goal off a corner by Kelsey Link.  The Wolverines tied the game in similar fashion during the 52nd minute off a corner when Morgan Seymour fed Lauren Mears at the top of the box.  Mears then juked the defender to the left and beat goalkeeper Beka Hess (four saves) in the right corner to tie it up.

Lynchburg outshot Wesley, 29-14, and also held a 17-11 advantage on corners, but goalkeepers Sarah Daniels (12 saves) and Kayla Fromal (four saves) helped keep the Wolverines in the game.  Daniels saw just over 82 minutes of action and came out of the game with 16:06 left in the second half for a yellow card, allowing Fromal to close out regulation between the cage.

Seymour and Brooke Gannon also were credited with defensive saves.

The Wolverines are on the road for three-straight games before returning home on September 11 to play Delaware Valley.  Wesley first travels to Immaculata on September 3 for a 4 pm start prior to a neutral site tournament at Salisbury University on September 5-6 where it will face off against Hendrix and Virginia Wesleyan.
