Wolverines Come up Short against Maroons

ROANOKE, Va. - The Wesley College Field Hockey team fell to Roanoke College by a score of 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Wolverines controlled the pace of play in the first half, but fell victim to a late surge by the Maroons.

Bridget Wood made a career-high 14 saves in over 60 minutes in the cage while Makenzie McIntyre made a pair of stops over the final 10 minutes of play. Kelsey Fromal and Lauren Niezgoda each tallied two shots on goal for the Wolverines. The team managed just six total shots on goal on the day.

Wesley controlled the pace of play in the first half, outshooting the Maroons 6-5 in the frame. In the 27th minute the Wolverines earned a penalty corner and created a pair of quality chances on goal. Niezgoda took a pair of shots on the doorstep, but Roanoke goalkeeper Heather Schauder padded them both away, keeping Wesley off the board. The two teams went into the break tied at 0-0.

In the second half, the Maroons turned up the offensive pressure. Roanoke outshot Wesley 20-4 in the second half and earned 11 corners to Wesley's two. The Maroons piled on three goals in a seven-minute stretch to jump out to a 3-0 lead before the Wolverines could recover. By that time it was too late as Wesley fell by that score.

The Wolverines move to 0-3 on the season and will look for their first win of the season at Ferrum College on Sunday.
