Wesley Triumphs over Ferrum for First Victory of the Season

FERRUM, Va. - The Wesley College Field Hockey team earned a 3-1 victory over the Ferrum College Panthers on Sunday afternoon. Three seniors led the Wolverines to the victory, each scoring a goal in the game.

Isabella Lucia, Lauren Niezgoda, and Allison Perugini each netted a score for the Wolverines on Sunday as the team earned its first victory of the season. Lucia and Niezgoda each also received an assist on the day.

Bridget Wood earned the win in net, playing the first half without allowing a goal and making two saves. Sidney Knott played the second half for the Wolverines.

Wesley took an early lead by scoring off a set piece in the sixth minute. On a penalty corner Lauren Niezgoda inserted to Isabella Lucia who ripped a shot off the post. The rebound went directly to Niezgoda who fired it home to put Wesley ahead 1-0. The Wolverines hung onto their slim lead until the halftime break.

In the second half, the Panthers netted an equalizer in the 43rd minute, but Wesley answered shortly after. On another set play, Niezgoda inserted to Lucia at the top of the arc. The senior brought the ball back into the shooting circle a ripped a laser that found the back of the box to make it 2-1. 

Later in the second half, Perugini got in on the scoring giving the Navy and White a much-needed insurance goal. Taylor Timmons broke down the defense, dribbling down the right flank, and centered it to Perugini. The senior collected the pass and fired a shot that beat the goalie and put the Wolverines ahead 3-1 with just over five minutes remaining. Wesley was able to hold onto their lead and earn the victory.

The Wolverines move to 1-3 on the season and will battle Keystone College on Wednesday, Sept. 14.
