Johnson Named CAC Player of the Year

2009 All-Capital Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Team

YORK, Pa. - Wesley College's Rashawn Johnson (Selbyville, Del./Sussex Tech) was named the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year after leading the Wolverines to the conference championship.  Teammate Evan Martin (Wilmington, Del./Laurinburg {N.C.} Institute) joined Johnson on the All-CAC squad, earning a place on the second team.

The senior duo forms a strong one-two punch for a Wesley team making its first appearance in the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championships on Friday, March 6 at Franklin & Marshall.  The squad also set a school record with 18 wins.

Johnson, who was a first-team All-CAC player in 2008 and All-PAC as a freshman and a sophomore, is a three-time all-region choice and is one of 10 finalists for the 2009 Josten's Award as the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Player of the Year.

He averaged a conference best 24.3 points per game, nearly four points better than the next best average and ranks fifth in the nation.  Johnson also leads the circuit in three-point field goals (3.1 per game) and ranks among the conference leaders in minutes played (37.8 per game), steals (third, 1.8 per game), free throw percentage (sixth, .763).  With 81 three-point field goals this season, he broke his own single season record at Wesley.

Johnson holds Wesley records for career points (2,374), three-point field goals and free throws made (398), and ranks fourth all-time in rebounds (595) and steals (170).

Martin finished eighth in the CAC at 15.8 points per game, while earning his first all-conference honor.  He was also among the top performers in the conference in assists (third, 3.7 per game), three-point field goals (third, 2.6 per game), assist/turnover ratio (fourth, 1.4), steals (sixth, 1.7 per game), and three-point field goal percentage (eighth, .384).

He is seventh all-time at Wesley in assists (201) and sixth in three-point field goals (127).

Behind the efforts of Johnson and Martin, Wesley currently ranks fourth in NCAA Division III at 87.9 points per game, second with 10.6 three-point field goals per game and fifth with a turnover margin of 7.9.

Only two other schools, St. Mary's and Mary Washington, matched the Wolverines with two All-CAC selections.

In addition to Johnson winning the conference player of the year award, York (Pa.)'s Julian Watson and Marymount (Va.)'s Tarek Ammoury shared the CAC Rookie of the Year Award, while the Saints' Scott McClary was named Coach of the Year.
