DOVER, Del. - Best Buddies Delaware and the BlueGold All-Star Basketball Games will induct Wesley College head men's basketball coach Jerry Kobasa into the BlueGold Basketball Hall of Fame at the All-Star Banquet on March 14 at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino.
The banquet begins at 6 p.m. and is as a prelude to the All-Star Games on March 16, when 60 of the state's top senior boys and girls basketball players showcase their skills in the annual event.
Kobasa is a respected fixture in the Delaware basketball community, having served as a coach at both the high school and college levels for 30 years, 24 of them as a head coach. He has accumulated more than 370 victories while winning 63 percent of his games.
In his seven-plus seasons as head coach at Wesley College, Kobasa has rebuilt the program at his alma mater. He took over a team that had just two winning seasons in 17 years prior to his arrival and has led the Wolverines to the NCAA Basketball Tournament twice in the past five seasons. Kobasa, who is now the winningest coach in Wesley College men's basketball history, was inducted into the Wesley College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001.
Prior to coaching at Wesley College, Kobasa compiled a 249-130 record in 16 years as head coach at Sussex Tech and Smyrna High Schools. He was named Coach of the Year by the Delaware Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association in 1979 and 2004.
Kobasa is former chairperson of the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association and member of the board of directors of the Milford Boys and Girls Club.
He is a former long-time member of the Delaware Secondary Schools Athletic Association Board of Directors (the organization that preceded DIAA) and previously served as president of the Henlopen Conference, the Henlopen Basketball Coaches Association, and the Delaware Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association.
Kobasa has served as a member of the BlueGold Games board of directors for seven years.
The Wolverines (19-5, 9-2 CAC) are currently ranked 25th in the Nation by D3Hoops.com after earning a national ranking for the first time in program-history this season. Wesley, who's 19 wins matches a program-record, hosts Capital Athletic Conference rival Salisbury in the regular season finale on Saturday, February 16, at 4 pm.
