INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Wesley College's 10th-ranked basketball team will face Alvernia University in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament on Friday, March 7 on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan University. The winners of the first round games on Friday will square off the following day at a time to be determined.
The Wolverines are making their second-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament and fourth overall after going a program-best 22-3 on the season and earning an at-large berth. During Wesley's record-breaking season was a program-record 12 game winning streak.
The Crusaders of Alvernia are 20-7 on the year and earned the Commonwealth Conference's automatic bid after defeating Stevenson in the MAC-C Title Game. Alvernia is making its ninth overall appearance in the Big Dance and third in the last four years.
Leading the Wolverines, coached by Capital Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Jerry Kobasa, is senior center David Langan, who was also named the CAC Player of the Year. Langan is averaging 16.7 points, 10.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game while shooting an impressive 63.6% from the field. Fellow senior Eric Selby was a Second Team selection after averaging 9.3 points and a league-high 4.3 assists.
Junior Quincy Pettiford is the only other Wolverines averaging in double figures at 10.0 points per contest. Senior Brandin Youngblood puts up 8.6 points per game, while sophomores Wayne Lennon, Anthony Bowers and AJ Tilghman all average just over seven points per game.
A former conference rival of Wesley's in the old Pennsylvania Athletic Conference, Alvernia has five players averaging in double figures, led by Brian Parker with a team-high 18.9 points and 9.3 rebounds per night. Kahlil Bennett (14.7 ppg), Harrison Deyo (11.9 ppg, 7.1 rpg), Lamont Clark (11.2 ppg) and Chris Davis (10.1 points, 6.7 apg) also average at least 10 points per game while Charles Cooper averages 7.7 points off the bench.
Wesley is 1-17 all-time against Alvernia but the teams have not faced each other since the 2006-07 season.
Hosting the four team pod is the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan (22-6), who won the Old Dominion Conference Championship. The Marlins take on Johns Hopkins (17-10) in the opening round, as the Blue Jays earned the Centennial Conference's automatic bid after defeating Dickinson in the CC Title Game.
To open the 2013-14 season, Wesley won the Johns Hopkins Tournament which included a 90-76 victory over the Blue Jays in the title game on November 16. The Wolverines played Virginia Wesleyan last year and held on the defeat the then top-ranked Marlins, 72-70, on December 20, 2012 in Dover.
Earning the CAC's automatic bid was Mary Washington, who takes on Springfield in the 1st Round at Randolph-Macon. The Eagles and Wolverines could possibly meet in the Sweet 16 if both teams win their first and second round matchups.
