READING, Pa. - The Wesley College Men's Basketball team did not open their season the way they had hoped, falling in their 2016-17 opener 87-68 to Alvernia University on Tuesday evening in Reading.
Evan Anderson led the Wolverines in scoring with 23 points on 8-for-15 shooting, including a 5-for-8 performance from beyond the arc. JW Lawson added 18 points and Jordan Johnson notched 10. Paul Clemons nearly totaled a double-double in his Wesley debut, scoring eight points and snagging 11 rebounds.
Wesley jumped out to an early lead 4-2 lead but it was the only time they held an advantage throughout the entire game. Alvernia jumped on the Wolverines early, outscoring the Navy and White 41-21 in the first half.
In the second half, Wesley battled much more evenly with the Crusaders but by then it was too late to mount a comeback. The Wolverines opened the half on a 7-2 run behind five points from Anderson, but the Crusaders spread the gap back out. Alvernia never allowed Wesley closer than 14 points in the second half as the home team earned the victory.
The Wolverines begin the year with an 0-1 mark and will travel to Lebanon Valley College this weekend to compete in the Rinso Marquette Invitational hosted by the Dutchmen.
