Second-half surge advances men’s basketball to Atlantic East semifinals over Cabrini

DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College men's basketball team advanced to the semifinal round of the Atlantic East Conference Tournament after defeating the Cabrini Cavaliers, 87-69 in the quarterfinals.

The first half saw two of the top offenses engage in a game of runs. Wesley tallied the first run jumping out to a 14-5 lead just under five minutes to go in the opening frame. Cabrini countered back on an 18-9 run to tie the game at 23 with eight minutes left in the half. After a tied game, Cabrini would score the next 10 points establishing a 33-23 lead with just under five minutes to go. Wesley would end the half on an 11-2 run to trail Cabrini 35-34 going into the break.

During the second half, each team would trade three-pointers and lead changes until a Tyrone Craven layup gave Wesley a 43-41 lead with 17:21 remaining in regulation. Backed by their potent offensive attack, Wesley began to pull away from Cabrini courtesy of the hands of Brian Cameron. Cameron dropped 28 points in the second half on 9-of-11 shooting, including 2-of-3 from behind the three-point line. All of his free-throw attempts came in the second half, where he shot 8-of-10. The Wesley defense stood tall in the late goings, only allowing the Cavaliers to get within two.

Cameron finished the night with a career-high 48 points. He shot 17-of-27 from the field, including 6-of-7 from behind the three-point line. Cameron added 11 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the year. He also registered four assists in the win.

Craven came alive in the second half, scoring all 13 of his points in the second stanza. Craven drained three 3-pointers and hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds for his second double-double of the year. He also handed out five assists from the guard position.

Terrence Braxton chipped in with nine points, seven boards and a team-high six assists. Evan Anderson scored seven points, notched three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Tolu Babalola tallied six points, four points and a block.

D.J. Smith led Cabrini with 15 points

Wesley will travel north to Pennsylvania to take on the top-seeded Gwynedd Mercy Griffins in the semifinals of the Atlantic East Tournament. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip on Wednesday Feb. 20.
