DOVER, DE - The Wesley College men's basketball team will officially pull back the curtain on its 2019-2020 campaign this Saturday, November 9th at 2PM when they welcome the Roadrunners of Ramapo College to Wentworth Gymnasium. This season opening contest will be the first of 13 non-conference games for the Navy & White prior to opening the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) portion of its slate beginning after the New Year.
The Wolverines bring back five seniors for their final year in Tolu Babalola, Terrence Braxton, Derick Charles, Mychal Stefanides, and reigning AEC Player of the Year and Preseason All-American (as named by D3Hoops.com and DIII News) in Brian Cameron. Cameron was the fourth leading scorer in the nation during his junior season averaging 26.6 PPG to go along with his team leading 6.7 RPG. The 6'5 Charles comes into his senior season on the heels of being the team's third leading scorer last season at 10.8 PPG and second on the team with 6.2 RPG. Terrence Braxton will be relied heavily upon for his leadership and defensive prowess, but is also more than capable of filling up the stat sheet himself. Last season, Braxton averaged 6.4 PPG to go along with his 5.1 RPG while oftentimes taking on the challenge of having to try and stop the opposition's best offensive threat. Mychal Stefanides is back after having sat out the 2018-2019 season. During his junior season in 2017-2018, Stefanides averaged 8.3 PPG to go along with 3.6 RPG and 2.5 APG. Joining these five are eight (8) new faces who will be making their home debuts this weekend after last Saturday's exhibition game at Delaware State. In-state products, Greg Bloodsworth (transfer from Mid-Atlantic Christian University / Smyrna HS), Michael McCants (St. Georges Technical HS), and Brandin Obidike (Polytech HS) will provide some familiar faces to local basketball enthusiasts to go along with teammates who hail from six (6) other states and two (2) foreign countries. In addition to those mentioned above, Andrew Shepherd, Josh Hall, Josh Watts, Russell Keyhea, and Dylan Swientek all come to the "Capital City" eager to represent the Navy and White.
The Roadrunners come into their season opener coming off of a third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament with a Final Four appearance sandwiched in between during the 2017-2018 season. Ramapo was picked to finish 4th in the 2019-2020 NJAC Men's Basketball Preseason Poll that was announced on November 5th. The Roadrunners will look to the senior leadership of Rob McWilliams (12.3 PPG / 7.3 RPG a season ago), Matt Latka, Jordan Zagadou, & Connor Romano. Also returning for the Roadrunners is sophomore point guard Jason Battle. Battle led Ramapo in assists last season as a freshman.
As is typically the case, the Wolverines will once again challenge themselves early on in the non-conference as they will head to Staten Island, NY on Tuesday to face-off against Division I Wagner College. That will be followed by an in-region contest against DeSales (who was picked to finish first in the MAC Freedom Men's Basketball Preseason Poll) in the opening round of the SUNY-Oneonta Quality Inn Tip-Off Tournament. DeSales is one of three non-conference foes who have been tabbed to win their conference this coming season to go along with Cairn (CSAC) as well as a potential game against former CAC rival Christopher Newport.
