DOVER, Del. - Wesley College's Justin Thompson (Pasadena, Md./North East) scored with just one minute left in overtime to lead the Wolverines past Mary Washington 7-6 in a defensive battle in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play.
The Wolverines (2-1, 2-1 CAC) got the only goal of the first period off a shot by Brad Smith (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) just over three minutes into the contest. Neither team scored for over 16 and a half minutes, when Joe Trezza (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) put Wesley up 2-0 with his third goal of the year.
Brian Deal got the Eagles (3-2, 0-1 CAC) on the board with 7:14 to go in the half and Mary Washington tied it up when Dan Coats took an assist from Harry Snyder with just 1:29 left in the second period.
Wesley took another two-goal lead on goals by Smith and Dan Skeels (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) and held a 4-2 advantage with 4:46 remaining in the third quarter. Deal's second score of the game and a goal by Charlie White late in the quarter erased Wesley's lead and the two squads entered the fourth quarter tied at 4-4.
Brad Bivins (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) regained the lead for the Wolverines just over a minute into the final quarter, but Brent Fisk tied the game with 6:15 left before Deal found the back of the net again for Mary Washington's first lead of the contest with 5:11 to go in regulation.
The Eagles were attempting to run out the clock, but Hank Meinhardt (Mechanicsville, Md./Calverton School) forced a turnover with 1:44 to play to get Wesley possession. The Wolverines set up the offense looking for a tying goal and got just that from Nick Pisacano (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) with only 52 seconds left to force overtime.
Kirk Waldie (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) forced four turnovers on defense for the Wolverines. Jim McCleaft (Media, Pa./Sun Valley) made nine saves for the Wolverines.
Fisk picked up a game-high six ground balls for the Eagles.
Wesley continues its four-game homestand with a non-conference battle with Neumann on March 9 at 7:00 PM.
