WINCHESTER, Va. - The Wesley College Men's Lacrosse team nearly overcame a six-goal deficit, but could not complete their comeback as the Wolverines fell to Shenandoah University 15-12 on Saturday afternoon in their season opener.
Sam Seibert finished with four goals, leading seven different Wesley scorers while Zach Weitzel and Hunter Coho each notched a pair of scores. Ryan Ramsey netted a goal and finished with a team-high six ground balls while Oakley Dieter led the team with three caused turnovers and also scooped four ground balls. Zach Scholl took the loss in net, allowing nine goals and making a pair of saves in just over 37 minutes between the sticks. Sam Ford made three saves and allowed six goals in 22 minutes off the bench.
In the opening quarter the Wolverines fell behind 1-0, but tied the game shortly thereafter with a goal from Nate Gemmato. Shenandoah finished the quarter with three consecutive scores to go ahead 4-1. Seibert scored a pair of goals in the second quarter, and Ramsey added a score but the Hornets netted five to take an 8-4 advantage into the halftime break.
In the third quarter, Zach Weitzel opened the scoring to cut the deficit to three goals, but Shenandoah responded with three straight scores to go up by six, 11-5. From that point, the Wolverines offense started clicking. The Navy and White scored five straight goals, with Seibert (twice), Weitzel, Joe Fingles, and Hunter Coho each scoring to cut the lead to 11-10 entering the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Shenandoah took advantage of a Wesley penalty to earn a man-up goal and take a 13-11 lead, but the Wolverines responded immediately off the ensuing faceoff. Gemmato found John Chenault for a quick goal, cutting the deficit back to one. The Hornets added a pair of insurance goals to their lead before Hunter Coho found the net again making it 14-12. The Hornets added one more before the end of regulation as Wesley's comeback fell short and they took the 15-12 loss.
Wesley opens their season with an 0-1 mark and will face Arcadia on Wednesday, February 24 at 4:00 p.m. in their home opener.
