DOVER, Del. - The Wesley College Men's Lacrosse team was relentless in their effort, but ending up falling to the No. 20 Christopher Newport Captains on Saturday, 20-10.
Jack Redefer netted for goals and dished out a pair of assists while Nate Gemmato netted three and passed off an assist. Sam Seibert added a goal and two assists while John Chenault and Jordan Stewart each scored once. Cody Ireland made 14 saves in net against one of the nation's most potent offenses while Eric Bohns led the defense with four caused turnovers and scooped a team-high six ground balls.
The Wolverines took an early lead over Christopher Newport with a goal just 1:29 into play. Seibert streaked down the left side of the offensive zone, gained a step on his defender and fired a shot that beat the keeper low to make it 1-0.
The Captains responded with six straight scores over the next 17:39 to take a 6-1 lead, but the Wolverines answered with three straight goals in the second quarter. Redefer found Gemmato for a quick goal before scoring two himself to cut the Captains' lead to 6-4 with 7:50 remaining in the first half. The Captains seized momentum heading into the halftime break, outscoring Wesley 3-1 the rest of the way to take a 9-5 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Captains' depth overwhelmed the Wolverines as they ran off to five straight goals to open the third quarter. Goals from Jordan Stewart and Redefer kept the Wolverines around, but not for long as Christopher Newport outscored the Navy and White 6-3 the rest of the way to pull away for the 20-10 victory.
Wesley moves to 4-11 on the season and will play their final regular season home game on Wednesday, April 13 when they host Marymount.
