DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College men's lacrosse team picked up a hard-fought 9-8 double overtime victory over the Rosemont Ravens on Wednesday for their first win of the 2017 season.
Staring at 5-1 halftime deficit, Wesley rifled off a four unanswered goals to tie the game at five at the end of the third quarter.
Rosemont responded in the fourth by going up 8-6 with 5:28 remaining in regulation. After an illegal procedure penalty during the faceoff following Rosemont's eighth goal, Will Fingles converted the man-up opportunity on an assist from Nate Gemmato.
With time winding down in the fourth quarter, Zach Farnell tied up the game at eight with 1:17 left in regulation.
After a scoreless first overtime, Wesley wasted no time in the second overtime to win the game. Nate Gemmato won the faceoff opening the second overtime, then passed it to Joe Fingles who forwarded the ball on to Leo Kelly for the game-winning tally.
Farnell notched a hat trick for Wolverines while Kelly found the net twice in the win. Gemmato and Adam Tewey dished out two assists a piece while Gemmato added a goal.
As a team, the Wolverines caused 12 Raven turnovers and scooped up 25 ground balls.
James Cella stopped five shots to earn his first collegiate victory in net for the Wolverines.
Zach Bowe and Ben Koszelak led the Ravens with three goals respectively.
The Wolverines (1-1) will wrap up their season-opening three game homestand when they host the Immaculata Mighty Macs on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. from Drass Field at Scott D. Miller Stadium.
