Wassum’s five-goal day propels men’s lacrosse over Alvernia

DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College men's lacrosse team picked up an 11-7 victory at home on Saturday over the Alvernia Golden Wolves.

Alvernia had the early 3-2 lead in the first quarter before Wesley started to pull away from the Golden Wolves.

In the second quarter, Joe Fingles capitalized on Alvernia's penalties with a pair of man-up goals to level the game at four with five minutes to go in the quarter. Josh Wassum netted the go-ahead goal in the 28th minute to put Wesley up 5-4 on Alvernia heading to halftime.

Wesley kept the pressure up in the second half, getting out on a 6-3 scoring run to close out the game and seal the victory.

Wassum tallied five goals to lead the Wesley offense. He also scooped up four ground balls and caused three turnovers.

Zach Farnell notched a hat trick and added three caused turnovers, three ground balls and an assist. Joe Fingles recorded two goals and two assists along with three ground balls.

Adam Tewey registered a goal with two assists in the win. Matt Widdekind won seven faceoffs and picked up four ground balls.

Ben Mitzel, Tyler Lingenfelder, Nolan Vesey and Mitch Griffith each caused two turnovers on defense.

Dylan Sicca stopped 14 shots to earn his first collegiate victory in net for the Wolverines.

The Wolverines will begin conference play on Wednesday when they make the short trip south to Salisbury to take on the seventh-ranked Sea Gulls. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
