Danville, VA. - The Wesley College Men's Lacrosse team defeated the Averett Cougars 9-8 on the road Wednesday afternoon.
Wesley's defense shined early on with the Wolverines getting deflections and causing multiple turnovers in the first half. The first goal of the game was made by Sophomore Derek Hallock five minutes in with the assist from Ryan Gilman.
Wesley led the Cougars 2-0 at the end of the first period.
Averett brought out strong defense early in the second however, during a man-up opportunity, Senior Nick Bruhn found an opportunity to score, assisted by Jon Curtis. With 4:30 left in the first half, Sophomore Parker Corbett put Averett on the board with their first goal.
Wesley continued their dominant defensive play, resulting in 13 turnovers during multiple Cougar clear attempts. On the defensive end, Bruhn caused a turnover that allowed him to pick up the groundball and take it all the way to the net for his second goal of the game. Just over halfway through the third, Mason Foy scored two quick goals for Averett.
Wolverines led at the end of the third, 7-3.
The intensity of the game picked up quickly in the fourth with Averett scoring five goals to Wesley's two, putting the Cougars within one goal with one-minute remaining in the game.
The Wolverines defense was able to hold the Cougars off and secure their second win of the season.
Joe Delgado led the team with three goals. Bruhn caused a game-high five caused turnovers, grabbed nine ground balls, two goals and handed out two assists. Keonte Coates tallied three caused turnovers in the win.
Wesley (2-1) will take on the Centenary Cyclones (0-3) Saturday March 7th at Drass Field. Faceoff is set for 2 pm.
