No. 7 York (Pa.) Bests Wesley
DOVER, Del. - No. 7 York (Pa.) scored twice in each half to defeat Wesley 4-1 in a physical Capital Athletic Conference men's soccer match.
The Spartans' (10-1-2, 4-0-1 CAC) Mike O'Connell put the visitors ahead early in the 15th minute. Just three minutes later, the Wolverines (7-6, 3-3 CAC) had an excellent scoring chance, but a breakaway shot by Frank Buffa (Phoenixville, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) hit the post.
York added a long range goal by Justin Suchoski for a 2-0 lead at the half.
The play turned physical in the second with the squads combining for 19 fouls and four cautions, but the teams also tallied three goals total.
A penalty kick by Aaron Good extended the Spartans' advantage to 3-0 at the end of the 58th minute, then Kemal Nuspahic made it 4-0 seven minutes later.
Wesley got on the board at 70:56 when Josh Chellah (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) got through the York defense for his fourth score of the season, beating York's Kyle Connolly.
Nick Talarico (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands) stopped five shots for the Wolverines before Tom Mikulski (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) came on for the final 19 minutes.
"We had a great effort in the first half," said Wesley head coach Steve Clark. "We were just a little unfortunate in the goals, but we kept battling. Although we put our head down a bit after the PK, we showed we can compete with anyone in the nation. But we need to try to keep improving."
Ryan Hock made a pair of saves in 65 minutes for the Spartans, who were coming off a win over No. 1 Messiah, before giving way to Connolly.
The Wolverines will try to regroup on Wednesday with a match against Delmarva rival Washington on October 13.
