DOVER, Del. – Wesley College's men's soccer team played even with 13th-ranked Christopher Newport for 56 minutes but a Captains goal in the 57th minute along with two late goals gave the Captains a 3-0 victory on Friday night at Scott D. Miller Stadium. The Wolverines now stand at 5-4-1 overall and 0-2 in the Capital Athletic Conference while CNU moves to 9-1-2 on the year and 1-0-1 in the CAC.
Freshman Zack Baker made just the second start of his career and his first in conference play and stopped a season-high five shots. Christopher Newport put Baker to the test with 16 shots on the night compared to Wesley's five.
All-American Jalon Brown scored what was the game-winner for Christopher Newport on a cross from Ryan Balfour at 56:14and he later beat a charging Baker off a pass from Patrick Burns with just 3:09 left to play to seal the victory. Burns later scored with 30 seconds remaining from 25 yards out.
A native of Townsend, Del., Baker had two saves in the first half and made three more in the second to keep Wesley in the match.
Of Wesley's five shots, four were on target.
The Wolverines travel to face Marymount (Va.) in a CAC matchup on Wednesday, October 8 at 7 pm.
