VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Wesley College men's soccer team fell in a heartbreaker to Virginia Wesleyan in the Christopher Newport University Invitational, falling 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Ryan Sanders made a season-high nine saves in net but took the loss between the sticks for the Wolverines. Connor Kirkham finished with four saves to preserve a clean sheet for the Marlins.
Wesley played hard throughout the game but the team was outshot 23-8 on the day. The Marlins broke through with a goal in the 37th minute when Tyler Ostrovecky found Travis Walke for a tally, beating Sanders for the goal.
The Wolverines had a few chances to tie the game before halftime with three shots on goal and two corners in the first half, but couldn't equalize. Kyle Jackson had a shot on goal and J.P. Amougou ripped a shot on goal as well.
After the break, Wesley continued to work for offensive opportunities but were denied by the Marlins. Wesley managed just one shot on goal through the second frame as the Wolverines dropped the match by the score of 1-0.
Wesley will seek their first win of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 9 when they travel to Penn St. - Berks. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
